Many Hands, 20 Bags: A Hope in Hand Packing Day

This October, our community gathered at the Harwood House in Dana Point to pack 20 Hope in Hand bags for families newly facing a childhood cancer diagnosis. Volunteers of every age showed up, from grade-schoolers to grandparents, and the tables quickly disappeared under piles of cozy blankets, soft stuffed animals, tumblers, slippers, pencil cases, books, and little squishy toys for the kids.

Assembly-line style, every item found its place. Blankets were rolled, pouches were zipped, and each gray bag carrying our sunrise logo got filled with care until 20 of them stood lined up and ready to go.

Why does this matter? A diagnosis turns a family's world upside down in an instant. Parents often arrive at the hospital with nothing, then stay far longer than they ever imagined. These bags meet that moment with practical comfort: something warm to wrap up in, a few familiar comforts, and something to help a child smile. Most of all, they carry our message: We see you. We're with you. You are not alone.

That's what Always Living looks like to us. The hard things are real, and there can still be good. A bag can't change a diagnosis, but it can make those first days a little lighter, and remind a family that people they've never met are standing with them.

A special thank you to the Harwood House for opening its beautiful space to us. And to every volunteer who gave an afternoon, every donor who stocked our tables, and every friend who shopped our Amazon Wish List: thank you. You made these 20 bags possible.
